Overview
A grade is a promise about temperature, not a brand name
Engine oil is bought on three numbers — viscosity grade, service category and base-oil type — and everything else is packaging. We quote against those three, name the blender on the offer, and ship with batch test certificates.
The SAE grade describes how the oil behaves at two temperatures. In 15W-40, the 15W is winter performance — how easily the oil pumps and cranks at cold start — and the 40 is the viscosity retained at 100 °C when the engine is hot. Multigrade oils (10W-30, 15W-40, 20W-50) use viscosity index improvers to satisfy both ends; monogrades (SAE 30, 40, 50) are still bought in hot climates for older diesel engines, hydraulics and gear cases where cold start is not a constraint.
The API service category tells you which engine generation the additive package was designed for. Petrol engines run S-series categories — API SL, SN, SN PLUS and the current SP, which adds low-speed pre-ignition protection for turbocharged direct-injection engines. Diesel engines run C-series — CF-4 and CH-4 for older fleets, CI-4 and CI-4 PLUS for EGR engines, and CJ-4/CK-4 low-SAPS oils for engines with diesel particulate filters and SCR aftertreatment. ACEA sequences (A3/B4, C3, E7, E9), ILSAC GF-5/GF-6 and JASO MA2 are quoted where those approvals matter.
Base oil decides drain interval and price. Group I and II mineral oils remain the volume of most emerging markets and are correct for older, hard-worked engines. Group III and PAO synthetics give lower volatility, better cold pumping and drain intervals two to three times longer, which is why 5W-30 and 0W-20 dominate modern passenger-car fleets. Semi-synthetic blends sit in between and are the fastest-growing tier we ship for retail brands.
We are a sourcing and export house, not a blender. We buy from established Indian lubricant plants — the same blenders supplying OEM fill and national retail brands — and require a certificate of analysis per batch covering kinematic viscosity at 40 °C and 100 °C (ASTM D445), viscosity index (D2270), flash point (D92), pour point (D97), TBN (D2896), sulphated ash and zinc/phosphorus content. Where your market demands it, we arrange third-party testing before loading.

How we work
We source from India's established brands — we do not manufacture
Akarta Exports is a sourcing and export house. We do not own factories and we do not claim to. Our value is that we know which well-known Indian brands and manufacturers make what, to what standard, and at what price — and we buy from them to the exact specification you give us.
01 — Your specification, written down
We start from your specification, not from a catalogue. Grade, dimension, tolerance, finish, test standard, pack, artwork and labelling are put in writing and confirmed with you before a single enquiry goes out.
02 — Matched to the right Indian brand
We place that specification with established, well-known Indian brands and manufacturers in the cluster that genuinely makes the product — Morbi for tiles, Rajkot and Ludhiana for machinery, Meerut and Jalandhar for sports goods, Kerala and Gujarat for spices.
03 — Offers compared on merit
Because we own no plant and owe no factory a minimum offtake, we compare offers openly on quality, consistency, capacity and price — and tell you where a lower price will not hold up in your market.
04 — Inspected, consolidated, shipped
Our own inspectors clear the goods at the brand's plant and again before loading. Multiple brands and multiple divisions consolidate into one container, one invoice and one document set.
Brand names are disclosed to you on the offer and named on the inspection report, so you always know whose production you are buying. Where a buyer already has a preferred Indian brand, we are happy to source that brand and handle only the inspection, consolidation, documentation and shipping.

Quality assurance
Nothing leaves India until our own inspectors clear it
Akarta runs an in-house quality department with inspectors assigned to each division. Goods are checked at the factory during production and again before loading, against the written specification agreed on your purchase order — not against the factory's own grading.
- Pre-production sample approved by the buyer before bulk manufacture begins
- In-line checks during production for shade, calibration, dimension and moisture
- Pre-shipment inspection with photographic report before container sealing
- Third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) arranged where required

Packing & shipping
Packed the way your market receives it
Lubricants are a hazard-classified, temperature-sensitive, weight-limited cargo. Packing and load planning decide whether the container arrives leak-free and within road limits at the other end.
- 1 L and 5 L HDPE bottles with induction seal and tamper cap, shrink-wrapped in printed cartons
- 20 L pails with lever-lock lids, palletised 24–48 per pallet and strapped with edge boards
- 210 L / 208 L mild steel drums, epoxy-lined where required, bung-sealed and drum-clip secured
- 1,000 L IBC totes and ISO flexitank loading for bulk base and finished oils
- Batch number, manufacturing date, MRP and grade laser-coded on every pack
- Load plan built to gross weight limits with dunnage and airbags so drums do not shift in transit
Documentation
Paperwork prepared in-house, not outsourced
Every consignment travels with a complete document set, prepared by our own documentation team and checked against your letter of credit or contract terms before dispatch.
Certificate of analysis
Batch-wise viscosity, VI, flash, pour, TBN, sulphated ash and elemental analysis from the blender's laboratory.
Safety data sheet (SDS)
16-section GHS-format SDS per product, in the language your customs authority requires.
Dangerous goods & MSDS declaration
UN classification, packing group and non-hazardous declarations where the grade qualifies.
Specification & approval letters
API licence numbers, JASO registration, ACEA claims and OEM approval references per grade.

Buyer questions
What importers usually ask us first
Which grade should we stock for our market?
It follows the fleet age and the climate. Hot markets with older vehicles move 20W-50 and SAE 40 in volume; markets with newer imports need 5W-30, 5W-40 and increasingly 0W-20. For commercial fleets, 15W-40 CI-4 is the global workhorse — move to CK-4 only if your market runs DPF-equipped engines and low-sulphur diesel. Send us your typical vehicle parc and we will propose a shelf with volumes per grade.
Do you supply private-label engine oil?
Yes, and it is most of what we ship. You supply the brand name and artwork; we arrange bottle mould or stock bottle, label or in-mould printing, induction seal, hologram, carton print and batch coding. Minimums are typically one pallet per SKU on stock bottles, higher if a dedicated mould is required. The blender is named on the offer and the certificate of analysis so you know exactly what you are buying.
Are the values on your data sheets guaranteed?
They are typical of current production, not a specification. Minor variations occur in normal manufacturing, so every consignment ships with a batch certificate of analysis and the batch values govern. Where a tender or import authority requires it, we also arrange independent third-party testing before the container loads.
Is mineral oil still worth stocking?
In most emerging markets, yes. Group I and II mineral oils remain the correct choice for older, hard-worked engines and they carry the price point that moves volume. Synthetics sell on longer drain intervals and cold-start performance — a genuine benefit for newer engines, and a growing premium tier, but not a replacement for the mineral range.
How is a mixed lubricant container built?
We consolidate engine oil, hydraulic oil, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant and grease into one container and one invoice, weight-planned so the load stays inside road limits at destination. That is the reason most distributors work with us rather than with individual blenders: one purchase order, one set of documents, one accountable supplier.
What documentation travels with the shipment?
Batch certificate of analysis, GHS safety data sheet, packing list matched to the load plan, invoice, certificate of origin, bill of lading and any destination conformity certificate your market requires. Documentation is prepared in-house and checked against your letter of credit terms before dispatch.
