Wooden stacking rings, lacquered spinning tops, rattles and wooden shape puzzles on a workbench

Wooden toys from Channapatna, Varanasi and India's newer export plants.

Channapatna has turned lac-coated wooden toys for more than two hundred years, and its toys carry a Geographical Indication tag. Alongside it, newer factories in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan make Montessori and early-learning toys at export scale. We source from both, and test every batch against your market's paint and wood rules.

Overview

Craft toys and classroom toys under one roof

Wooden toys under HS 9503 are one of the clearest export stories in Indian toys. Buyers in Europe, North America and Japan want plastic-free, long-lasting toys, and India has both the craft skill and the timber.

Channapatna toys are turned on a lathe from soft hale wood (Wrightia tinctoria) and coloured with lac mixed with natural or approved colours. The finish is smooth and glossy, and it tests well against EN 71-3 heavy-metal limits when the colour source is controlled. Varanasi's lacquerware trade makes similar turned toys. Saharanpur, best known for wood carving, makes larger toys and dolls' houses.

Montessori and educational ranges are made in batches in modern plants using rubberwood, beech or plywood and MDF. Edges are radiused, coatings are water-based, and parts are sized against the small-parts cylinder. Common items include stacking rings, shape sorters, peg puzzles, number rods, sensory boards, balance toys and abacus sets.

Wood moves with humidity, so we check moisture content (usually 8–12%) before finishing, use silica gel in packing, and avoid shipping freshly finished goods. Where buyers ask for it, timber comes with FSC chain-of-custody certificates, and MDF is E1 or CARB Phase 2 compliant.

How we work

We source from India's established brands — we do not manufacture

Akarta Exports is a sourcing and export house. We do not own factories and we do not claim to. Our value is that we know which well-known Indian brands and manufacturers make what, to what standard, and at what price — and we buy from them to the exact specification you give us.

01 — Your specification, written down

We start from your specification, not from a catalogue. Grade, dimension, tolerance, finish, test standard, pack, artwork and labelling are put in writing and confirmed with you before a single enquiry goes out.

02 — Matched to the right Indian brand

We place that specification with established, well-known Indian brands and manufacturers in the cluster that genuinely makes the product — Morbi for tiles, Rajkot and Ludhiana for machinery, Meerut and Jalandhar for sports goods, Kerala and Gujarat for spices.

03 — Offers compared on merit

Because we own no plant and owe no factory a minimum offtake, we compare offers openly on quality, consistency, capacity and price — and tell you where a lower price will not hold up in your market.

04 — Inspected, consolidated, shipped

Our own inspectors clear the goods at the brand's plant and again before loading. Multiple brands and multiple divisions consolidate into one container, one invoice and one document set.

Brand names are disclosed to you on the offer and named on the inspection report, so you always know whose production you are buying. Where a buyer already has a preferred Indian brand, we are happy to source that brand and handle only the inspection, consolidation, documentation and shipping.

Quality assurance

Nothing leaves India until our own inspectors clear it

Akarta runs an in-house quality department with inspectors assigned to each division. Goods are checked at the factory during production and again before loading, against the written specification agreed on your purchase order — not against the factory's own grading.

  • Pre-production sample approved by the buyer before bulk manufacture begins
  • In-line checks during production against the written specification on your order
  • Pre-shipment inspection with photographic report before container sealing
  • Third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek) arranged where required

Buyer questions

What importers usually ask us first

Are Channapatna toys safe for babies?

When made with controlled lac and colours, they pass EN 71-3 and ASTM F963 heavy-metal tests. We test each batch rather than relying on the craft's reputation.

Can you supply plastic-free packaging?

Yes. Kraft boxes, paper tape, cardboard inserts and paper-based void fill are available on most wooden ranges.

Do you provide FSC-certified wood?

On request. FSC-certified supply is available for beech, rubberwood and plywood ranges, and the certificate is shown on the invoice.
