Two cities, six disciplines, one quality system
India has exported sports goods for more than a century — the leather-working and willow-turning trades in Meerut, Jalandhar and Sialkot's Indian counterparts grew up around the same colonial-era clubs that created the demand. What has changed is the buyer: today's importer wants certificates, consistent weights and repeatable colour, not just a low price.
Cricket is Meerut's business. English willow arrives in cleft form from Essex and Suffolk, Kashmir willow comes from the Bandipora and Anantnag belt, and both are seasoned, pressed, shaped, bound and finished within a few square kilometres of workshops. The city also produces the entire supporting range — leather balls stitched by hand, batting and keeping gloves, moulded and cane pads, helmets, stumps, bags and netting.
Ball sports, protective leather and gym steel are Jalandhar and Ludhiana's business. Hand-stitched, machine-stitched and thermo-bonded footballs, volleyballs, basketballs, rugby balls, boxing gloves, punch bags, focus mitts, weightlifting plates, dumbbells, benches and racks all come out of the Punjab belt, which also supplies the fabricated steel that gym equipment needs.
The difference between a good Indian sports goods shipment and a bad one is almost never the factory's capability — it is specification discipline. A football has a defined circumference, weight, sphericity, water absorption and rebound; a cricket bat has a weight band, edge thickness and grain count; a dumbbell has a plate tolerance and a coating spec. We quote against those numbers, inspect against them before packing, and reject against them when they are missed.
Compliance is quoted before production, not discovered at customs. Depending on your market and product we arrange BIS marking where applicable, CE and EN certification for protective and fitness equipment, EN 71 and ASTM F963 for junior and recreational items, REACH and phthalate testing for PVC and PU components, and federation approvals — FIFA Quality and Quality Pro, FIH, ICC-compliant sizing — where a competition claim is being made.
Private label is the norm rather than the exception. We handle brand tooling: pad printing and heat transfer on balls, screen printing and vinyl on bats and sticks, woven and embroidered labels on gloves and apparel, custom carton print, barcodes, hang tags, warranty inserts and Amazon-ready FNSKU labelling for buyers who sell online.

We start from your specification, not from a catalogue. Grade, dimension, tolerance, finish, test standard, pack, artwork and labelling are put in writing and confirmed with you before a single enquiry goes out.
02 — Matched to the right Indian brand
We place that specification with established, well-known Indian brands and manufacturers in the cluster that genuinely makes the product — Morbi for tiles, Rajkot and Ludhiana for machinery, Meerut and Jalandhar for sports goods, Kerala and Gujarat for spices.

Because we own no plant and owe no factory a minimum offtake, we compare offers openly on quality, consistency, capacity and price — and tell you where a lower price will not hold up in your market.
04 — Inspected, consolidated, shipped
Our own inspectors clear the goods at the brand's plant and again before loading. Multiple brands and multiple divisions consolidate into one container, one invoice and one document set.
Brand names are disclosed to you on the offer and named on the inspection report, so you always know whose production you are buying. Where a buyer already has a preferred Indian brand, we are happy to source that brand and handle only the inspection, consolidation, documentation and shipping.

Weight-dense items such as plates and dumbbells load to container weight limits rather than volume; inflatable balls are usually shipped deflated in bulk to roughly triple the pieces per container where your market allows re-inflation.

Akarta runs an in-house quality department with inspectors assigned to each division. Goods are checked at the factory during production and again before loading, against the written specification agreed on your purchase order — not against the factory's own grading.

Sports goods fail in transit more often than they fail in the factory. Balls crush, bats bow, chrome rusts and printed cartons scuff. Packing is quoted as part of the specification, not left to the workshop.

Buyer questions
What importers usually ask us first
Can we mix disciplines in one container?
Yes, and most of our buyers do. We consolidate from multiple factories into a single loading, with one packing list and one set of export documents. The only constraint is weight: if the load includes plates or dumbbells, the container hits its weight limit long before it fills, so light goods such as balls and gloves are usually loaded on top of a weight-dense base.
What is the difference between English willow and Kashmir willow bats?
English willow is lighter for its volume, more fibrous and gives noticeably better rebound, which is why match-grade bats are made from it — but it needs careful knocking-in and has a shorter life under hard use. Kashmir willow is denser, more forgiving of neglect and considerably cheaper, which makes it the right choice for club, school and recreational ranges. Most buyers stock both, with English willow at the top of the range.
Do you supply FIFA-approved footballs?
We supply footballs made to FIFA Basic, Quality and Quality Pro parameters, and can route production through factories that hold current FIFA approvals when the mark is required on the ball. Approval carries real cost — it involves lab testing for circumference, sphericity, rebound, water absorption, loss of pressure and shape retention — so we usually recommend it only for match ranges and quote unmarked equivalents for training goods.
Can you produce our own brand rather than a generic one?
Private label is our standard mode. We handle print tooling, embroidery files, mould inserts, carton artwork, hang tags, barcodes and marketplace labelling. Send your artwork and colour references and we return physical samples for approval before bulk. Once a golden sample is signed off it is retained at the factory and at our office as the reference for every repeat order.
How do you protect against quality drift on repeat orders?
Three mechanisms. A signed golden sample held in two places, a written specification sheet with tolerances rather than adjectives, and inspection at 30% and 70% of production instead of only at the end — which is what allows a problem to be corrected while the line is still running rather than after the goods are boxed.
Which port do you ship from?
Mundra and Nhava Sheva for most sports goods, with Kandla and Pipavav available. Inland factories move to port by road on covered trailers. We quote FOB, CFR and CIF, and can work with your nominated freight forwarder if you have contracted rates.
